Track and Measure Brand Equity: A Guide for Modern Businesses

Founders understand unit economics, CAC, and LTV. Brand equity? That gets filed under “we will know it when we see it.” That is a problem, because brand development is one of the largest investments a company makes, and it deserves the same rigour as any other line item.

What brand equity actually is

Brand equity is the measurable value your brand adds beyond the functional attributes of your product or service. It shows up in:

  • Pricing power: Can you charge more than competitors for comparable offerings?
  • Customer preference: Do people choose you when alternatives are available?
  • Retention and loyalty: Do customers come back and refer others?
  • Talent attraction: Does your brand help you hire better people faster?
  • Fundraising leverage: Do investors perceive lower risk because of brand credibility?

Metrics that matter

You cannot manage what you do not measure. Start with these:

  1. Brand awareness: Aided and unaided recall in your target segment.
  2. Brand consideration: Are you on the shortlist when buyers evaluate options?
  3. Net Promoter Score (NPS): Would customers recommend you?
  4. Share of voice: Your brand’s visibility relative to competitors.
  5. Conversion rate by channel: Does branded traffic convert better than unbranded?
  6. Employee offer acceptance rate: Is your employer brand working?

Connecting brand development to business outcomes

After a brand development engagement (strategy, identity, naming, launch) you should see movement in at least two of these metrics within six to twelve months. If you do not, the problem is either the strategy (wrong positioning) or the application (inconsistent rollout).

Building equity through the full system

Brand equity is not built by a logo alone. It accumulates when strategy, identity, design, and launch work together consistently over time.

At Maker Street Studios, we build brand systems designed to compound, clear positioning, distinctive identity, documented guidelines, and launch plans that ensure the brand is applied correctly from day one.

Questions founders ask

What is brand equity in practical terms?

The measurable value your brand adds beyond the functional attributes of the product. It shows up as pricing power, customer preference when alternatives exist, retention and referral, easier hiring, and investors perceiving lower risk. It is not a feeling. Each of those has a number attached somewhere in your business.

Which brand metrics should I track?

Six are a sensible starting point. Aided and unaided awareness in your target segment. Consideration, meaning whether you make the shortlist. Net Promoter Score. Share of voice against competitors. Conversion rate by channel, comparing branded and unbranded traffic. And employee offer acceptance rate as a read on employer brand.

How soon should brand investment show up in the numbers?

Within six to twelve months you should see movement in at least two of your brand metrics after a full engagement covering strategy, identity, naming and launch. If nothing moves, the problem is either the strategy, meaning wrong positioning, or the application, meaning inconsistent rollout.

Can a logo build brand equity on its own?

No. Equity accumulates when strategy, identity, design and launch work together consistently over time. A mark with no positioning behind it and no discipline in application gives people nothing to attach meaning to. The compounding comes from repetition of a coherent system, not from the quality of one asset.

Why bother measuring brand at all?

Because brand development is one of the larger investments a company makes and deserves the same rigour as any other line item. Founders who track unit economics closely often file brand under intuition. Measuring it turns an argument about taste into a conversation about whether the investment is working.

We partner with businesses at moments that matter. From startups to scaleups, Maker Street Studios is structured to set up, scale, and launch impactful brands.
