Electric Island: A Sun Soaked Fever Dream

Reading time: 2 min

Maker Street Studios branding studio in Newstead, Brisbane

Electric Island is a beach-side house music festival. Asun-soaked experience built around the immersive pulse of summer. When the team came to us, they did not need a poster. They needed a brand identity that could carry the feeling of the event across every touchpoint: tickets, social, merchandise, stage design, and partner collateral.

This is brand design in its most experiential form, where identity is not just seen, but felt.

The brand challenge

Festival brands live and die on atmosphere. Electric Island needed an identity that was fluid and immersive, capturing Australia’s summer festival energy without feeling generic or borrowed from overseas references.

The identity had to work at scale (main stage, site-wide signage) and at thumb-scale (social feeds, ticket apps), while remaining unmistakably Electric Island.

Our approach: identity as experience

We approached this as a brand identity project, not a campaign. That meant building a system, not a one-off key visual.

  • Visual language: Fluid forms and saturated colour that evoke heat, water, and movement.
  • Typography: Bold, confident type treatments that hold at distance and compress for digital.
  • Application system: Rules for how the identity flexes across formats without losing coherence.
  • Art direction principles: Photography and motion guidelines that extend the brand beyond the logo.

What brand development delivered

The result was an identity system the Electric Island team could own and extend, not a single design file they would outgrow after one season.

That is the difference between hiring a designer for a poster and partnering with a branding agency on a system built to last.

When experiential brands need a system

Events, venues, and cultural brands often treat identity as disposable, new creative every year, no through-line, no equity built. The smarter play is to invest in a flexible system that evolves season to season while accumulating recognition.

At Maker Street Studios, we bring the same strategic rigour to festival brands as we do to startup identities, because every brand, regardless of category, needs a foundation that scales.

Questions founders ask

What did Electric Island need from a brand engagement?

An identity system rather than a poster. The festival needed a brand that could carry the feeling of the event across tickets, social, merchandise, stage design and partner collateral. That meant treating it as brand identity work, with rules for how the system flexes, not a one-off key visual.

How do you design an identity for a festival?

By building for atmosphere and for scale at the same time. Electric Island needed fluid forms and saturated colour that evoke heat, water and movement, bold typography that holds at main-stage distance and compresses for a phone screen, plus application rules and art direction principles that extend the brand beyond the logo.

Why not just commission new creative each year?

Because you build no recognition. Events, venues and cultural brands often treat identity as disposable, which means every season starts from zero. A flexible system can evolve season to season while accumulating recognition, so the audience arrives already knowing what the brand feels like before they read a word.

What did Electric Island end up owning?

An identity system the team could own and extend, rather than a single design file they would outgrow after one season. That is the difference between hiring a designer for a poster and partnering with a branding agency on a system built to last across seasons and formats.

Do cultural brands get the same process as startups?

Yes. Maker Street Studios brings the same strategic rigour to festival brands as to startup identities, because every brand needs a foundation that scales regardless of category. The touchpoints differ, but the underlying work of positioning, system design and documented application is the same.

We partner with businesses at moments that matter. From startups to scaleups, Maker Street Studios is structured to set up, scale, and launch impactful brands.
