Artificial Authenticity: Is Authenticity in Branding Dead or Just Mislabelled?

Every brand brief asks for authenticity. Every agency deck promises it. And yet most brands feel interchangeable, same tone, same values, same stock photography of diverse teams laughing at laptops.

Authenticity in branding is not dead. It has been mislabelled. What most companies call authentic is actually performative. Acurated version of realness designed to pass a vibe check, not built on genuine strategic foundations.

What authenticity actually means in brand development

Authentic brands are not the ones with the most honest Instagram captions. They are the ones where strategy, behaviour, and design align.

At Maker Street Studios, authenticity is an output of good brand development:

  • Strategy: A positioning rooted in what the company actually does, not what the category expects.
  • Messaging: Language that sounds like the founders, not a consultancy.
  • Identity: Visual design that reflects the company’s character, not a trend report.
  • Behaviour: The brand kept consistently across product, hiring, sales, and support.

The AI question

Generative AI has made it easier than ever to produce brand-like content (logos, copy, mood boards, campaign concepts) at speed. That does not make brands more authentic. It makes them more homogeneous.

The brands that will stand out in an AI-saturated landscape are the ones with clear strategic foundations that AI cannot replicate: genuine positioning, distinctive naming, and identity systems built on real differentiation.

How to build an authentic brand system

Start with interrogation, not inspiration boards. Ask:

  1. Why does this company exist beyond making money?
  2. What do we believe that competitors do not?
  3. Who specifically are we for, and who are we not for?
  4. What should we always do? What should we never do?

These questions belong in brand strategy: before any design work begins. The answers become the filter for every identity and design decision downstream.

Authenticity is a system, not a sentiment

Stop chasing authenticity as a feeling. Build it as a system (strategy, naming, identity, design, and launch) where every element reinforces the same truth about who you are.
