Every founder has opinions about their brand. Few can articulate them in a way that moves people. A brand manifesto bridges that gap. It is the document (or film, or page) that captures what your brand stands for and invites your audience to stand with you.

### Manifesto vs mission statement

A mission statement describes what the company does. A manifesto expresses what it believes. The difference is emotional weight.

Mission: “We provide safety consulting for enterprise organisations.” Manifesto: “Every person deserves to come home from work. We exist to make that non-negotiable.”

One informs an org chart. The other builds a movement.

### Where manifestos live in brand development

At Maker Street Studios, manifesto writing sits in the Strategy phase: alongside positioning, messaging architecture, and narrative development. It is not a creative writing exercise. It is a strategic one.

A good manifesto emerges from:

- Brand strategy workshops with founders and leadership
- Audience definition and competitive analysis
- Core beliefs that differentiate the brand
- Language that sounds like the company, not a consultancy

### How to write one that resonates

1. **Start with belief, not features**: What does your company believe that others do not?
2. **Write for one person**: Not “our customers” but the specific human you are trying to reach.
3. **Use language you would actually say**: If it sounds like it came from a brand workshop, rewrite it.
4. **Make it short enough to remember**: A manifesto is not a white paper. One page. Maybe two.
5. **Test it against behaviour**: Does the company actually live this? If not, it is fiction.

### Using your manifesto

A manifesto is not a document that lives in a folder. It informs hiring, product decisions, sales conversations, and design direction. It is the strategic filter for everything downstream, identity, design, and launch.

### Questions founders ask

#### What is the difference between a manifesto and a mission statement?

A mission statement describes what the company does. A manifesto expresses what it believes. One informs an org chart, the other builds a movement. Saying you provide safety consulting is a mission. Saying every person deserves to come home from work is a manifesto, and it carries emotional weight.

#### Where does a manifesto come from?

Strategy work, not creative writing. A good manifesto emerges from brand strategy workshops with founders and leadership, audience definition, competitive analysis, and the core beliefs that genuinely differentiate the business. At Maker Street Studios it sits in the Strategy phase alongside positioning, messaging architecture and narrative development.

#### How do I write a manifesto that resonates?

Start with belief rather than features. Write for one specific person rather than an audience segment. Use language you would actually say out loud. Keep it short enough to remember, which usually means one page. Then test it against behaviour. If the company does not live it, it is fiction.

#### How long should a brand manifesto be?

Short. One page, maybe two. A manifesto is not a white paper and it fails if nobody can remember it. The test is whether a new employee could repeat the substance after reading it once. Length is usually a sign the belief underneath has not been narrowed down enough.

#### What is a manifesto actually for?

Deciding things. It should inform hiring, product decisions, sales conversations and design direction, acting as the strategic filter for everything downstream including identity, design and launch. A manifesto that lives in a folder has failed. One that gets quoted in a product meeting is doing its job.
